Diamond Export Guide

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is the international agreement designed to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the mainstream market. All rough diamond exports from participating countries must be accompanied by a Kimberley Process Certificate.

KPCS requires participating governments to certify that rough diamond exports are from non-conflict sources. Each shipment must be accompanied by an official certificate issued by the relevant national authority, confirming compliance with KPCS requirements.

Each laboratory issues a diamond grading report documenting the stone's exact characteristics. The report includes measurements, proportions, fluorescence and other quality indicators that determine the diamond's value.

Rough diamonds are typically sold with weight and quality descriptions rather than formal grading reports. Buyers rely on sorting and classification systems to assess rough diamond parcels.

Diamond export documentation includes Kimberley Process Certificate, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, customs declaration and gemological laboratory report (for polished stones).

For rough diamond exports, the KPCS certificate is the primary compliance document. For polished diamonds, the gemological grading report provides quality certification. Both require appropriate customs documentation for the destination country.

Import requirements vary by destination country. India requires a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmark for gold but has different requirements for diamonds. The EU and US have specific import declaration requirements.
