Copper cathodes produced from the African Copperbelt typically meet LME Grade A specifications with 99.99% copper purity. These cathodes are the international standard for refined copper and are accepted by LME-approved warehouses worldwide.

Copper concentrate is a semi-processed product containing 20% to 30% copper content. Concentrate is sold on the basis of contained copper metal, with price determined by the LME copper price minus treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs).

Copper export documentation includes commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, assay certificate, weight certificate and customs declaration. LME cathodes require additional documentation confirming LME approval status.

For concentrate shipments, the assay certificate documents the copper content, along with other valuable metals (gold, silver, cobalt) that may be payable. Treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs) are specified in the sales contract.

Certificate of origin is required for customs purposes and to determine applicable duty rates under bilateral or regional trade agreements.

Copper cathodes are typically shipped in standard 20-foot containers, with each container holding approximately 20-25 tonnes. Cathodes are bundled and secured to prevent movement during transit.

Concentrate is shipped in bulk via Handysize or larger vessels, or in bulk bags for smaller quantities. The choice depends on shipment volume, port infrastructure and buyer requirements.

Major export routes from the DRC and Zambia include the Dar es Salaam corridor (Tanzania), the Durban corridor (South Africa) and overland to Walvis Bay (Namibia). Route selection depends on origin location, cost and transit time.

Copper cathodes are priced based on the LME copper price plus or minus a premium determined by origin, quality and market conditions. LME settlement prices are the international benchmark for copper pricing.

Concentrate pricing is based on the contained copper value, less treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs). TC/RCs are negotiated between buyer and seller and reflect the cost of smelting and refining the concentrate into refined copper.

Payment for copper transactions is typically conducted via wire transfer, SBLC or DLC through international banking channels. Payment terms are specified in the sale and purchase agreement.
